Student government election opens today
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, and I’m reading about Chick-fil-A’s free breakfast deal. Onto the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
Nine candidates are vying for an open seat in the student government senate. Their promises include the typical unrealistic slop, but nonetheless offer a window into the student psyche: exclusive discounts at Erewhon, “improve” the WiFi, and more electric scooters on campus (please, dear God, no). Voting opens today at this link.
2.
USC, take notes: The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton business school banned student clubs from implementing ultra-competitive, multi-round interview processes. Resume-padding clubs at campuses across the country, including USC, have become increasingly notorious for their single-digit acceptance rates.
3.
A growing number of U.S. colleges are letting students move into dorms with their dogs and cats, pitching pet-friendly policies as a way to boost students’ mental health. I have a sneaking suspicion that their roommates’ mental health may move in the opposite direction.
4.
LA’s immigrant community had in recent weeks breathed a sigh of relief: The National Guard largely withdrew and Donald Trump turned his attention to other Democratic-run cities. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling changed that. “We all thought the raids were over,” one undocumented immigrant said.
5.
In 2016, an Orange County teenager worked his way into Kanye West’s inner circle. He began filming the artist nonstop. Now, his documentary “In Whose Name?” — an unfiltered portrait of Ye with no input from the artist — is set to premiere in theaters.
