USG delays election results
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
The Undergraduate Student Government postponed the release of its election results until next Tuesday, saying it needs more time to review several potential election code violations. It’s unclear what the alleged violations are, but expect the famously persnickety judicial council to publish its decisions in the coming days.
2.
USC’s cinema school abruptly shuttered its experimental animation program, citing declining enrollment. But rather than sunsetting the major and allowing all current students to finish classes, the school will force many to find alternative programs — and even rescinded admission offers for fall 2026 applicants.
3.
President Beong-Soo Kim reiterated that USC has solved the worst of its financial challenges in a radio interview with KCRW yesterday. “We’ve emerged from them even stronger and more aligned as a university community,” Kim said in the eight-minute interview, in which he masterfully dodged several potshots from the host.
4.
If you were wondering why a mob of students gathered by Troy Hall last night: J. Cole, the Grammy-winning rapper, made a surprise visit to University Park. It was part of a tour de LA the rapper made yesterday (which was meticulously tracked by Redditors), where he signed CDs out the back of his car to promote his new album.
5.
Not everybody was amused by our tuition guessing competition, which closes Sunday. “I think it's disgusting that you offer free weed for a contest,” wrote an older USC alum in Texas. “But the fact that that facility is your favorite establishment certainly explains many of your opinions.” I offered him laptop stickers as reparations but didn’t receive a reply.
