USC sued over alleged age discrimination
Good morning. It’s Friday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
A long-time USC employee who was laid off in August sued the university, alleging it engaged in a “pattern and practice” of replacing older workers with younger personnel. Sandra Parra, a former student programs advisor, was 55 at the time of her termination.
2.
The Trump administration gave up a monthslong legal battle over whether it can punish schools for maintaining DEI policies. But DEI supporters say the damage has been done: USC already erased online references to DEI and renamed its offices and programs. The anti-DEI camp, though, says nothing has practically changed.
3.
The student government announced this year’s senate candidates. We read through all 16 platforms so you don’t have to. Two highlights: KFC Kevin is running for reelection but no longer advocating for fried chicken in the Village. And this guy wants to plant fruit tree groves on campus so students eat more fruit.
4.
USC briefly issued a safety advisory yesterday after receiving threats against an employee who works in the school’s administration building. The FBI later deemed the racially charged threat a hoax and said other LA schools received similar messages.
5.
Pasadena’s annual “Cheeseburger Week” will kick off on Monday, commemorating the fast-food classic’s supposed invention in the city. An impressive roster of restaurants is offering special meals and discounts.
