Nurses plan strike

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.

1.

Some 1,800 nurses at USC’s Keck Hospital and Norris Cancer Center plan to stage a one-day strike next Thursday in protest of “dire” staffing levels that’ve led to missed rest and meal breaks. One-day strikes are typically meant as shows of force, and it’s possible that negotiators will stave off the walkout by its planned date.

2.

USC plans to revive its regional alumni associations after former President Carol Folt shuttered them in 2020 — a move that sparked outrage at the time. The first regional clubs will be in the Bay Area, Chicago, Denver, New York, Portland, San Diego, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

3.

An immigration enforcement operation in South LA spiraled out of control yesterday when a federal agent opened fire on an undocumented immigrant who allegedly rammed his car into law enforcement vehicles. The bullet struck the immigrant, who’s a popular TikToker, in the elbow, and a ricochet bullet hit a U.S. marshal in the hand.

4.

California homeowners will have to pay an average of $50 in surcharges to help insurance companies recoup losses from claims tied to January’s LA County wildfires. A consumer watchdog group previously sued state officials for approving the surcharges, characterizing them as an illegal industry bailout.

5.

If you’re looking for a Halloween-themed activity: The Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge are hosting a spectacle of artistic jack-o’-lanterns and seasonal exhibits. Tickets cost $27 to $45 depending on the time slot and parking is free. See footage of the gardens here.
