Fear, frustration for international students
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
International students are facing a gauntlet of Trump-era challenges as they complete their studies and search for jobs. Some say they wish USC would do more to help them navigate policy changes. “They could be a little more informative,” said one business major.
2.
USC this year launched its “First Semester in D.C. program,” which let 57 freshmen fulfill general education requirements in the school’s brand-new Capital Campus. “You will always know what’s going on, in politics, in the news, because it is just happening in our backyard,” said freshman Emilie Brewer.
3.
The share of students who leave California for college has doubled over the last two decades. It’s not entirely clear what’s driving the trend, though part of it could be an increasingly competitive UC system, generous financial aid offers, and heavy recruitment efforts by out-of-state schools.
4.
A study co-authored by a USC researcher found that while people commonly describe themselves as “addicted” to social media, few meet the clinical definition of addiction. The framing is important: People who believe they’re addicted report feeling less control over their scrolling and could rely on ineffective strategies to curb the habit.
5.
The New York Times compiled a list of the “50 Best Clothing Stores in America.” Unsurprisingly, a fifth are in California. Picks include a cashmere specialist in Hollywood, an “oceanside temple” in Newport Beach, a secondhand luxury retailer on Melrose, and an “excellent place for cool pants” in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley.
