Housing guarantee on chopping block
Good morning, it’s Thursday. Here are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
USC is considering dropping its longstanding guarantee that sophomores can receive university housing — though it has not made a final decision. A memo reviewed by Morning, Trojan suggested that, if the program were sunset, current freshmen would still benefit from the housing guarantee next year.
2.
A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration broke the law when it froze billions of dollars in research funds to Harvard University. The ruling likely won’t be the last word on the matter. But it was nonetheless a small victory for Harvard, which is largely seen as a bellwether for other universities subject to Trump’s ire.
3.
An Alabama man who called himself the “Angel of Death” was charged with multiple felonies after he allegedly threatened to “do the Lord’s reaping” and “separate the weak from the weeds” at an Orange County church. Police found high-capacity gun magazines, a sword, brass knuckles, duct tape, and rope in his truck.
4.
An ambulance carrying a car crash victim crashed into another car in Reseda, summoning a crash investigator — who promptly wound up in a third crash yesterday. The only person to sustain injuries was the original crash victim, and those were minor.
5.
Paul Jasmin, a Montana-born artist, “helped define the visual language of LA and its youthful dreamers,” The Guardian wrote. He died in May. Here, you can see a gallery of his intimate portraits of LA youth in the 90s and early aughts.
