Baby Trojans flood TikTok
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
USC admitted some 3,800 early action applicants on Friday who quickly took to TikTok to celebrate their wins. This girl opened her letter right before a swim meet. This dude had a self-deprecating take on his acceptance. And this girl wrote “Let’s get sendy” on her application and then actually got in.
2.
Morning, Trojan readers had strong feelings about USC’s new ChatGPT EDU subscription. “I’m paying $100,000 a year for a quality education, not a degree mill,” one student wrote. “USC purchasing ChatGPT for students is an embarrassment.”
3.
Rick Caruso, the billionaire developer and USC trustee, said he won’t run for California governor or LA mayor. The announcement ends months of speculation that Caruso would face Mayor Karen Bass in a rematch of the 2022 election, and all but ensures both races will lack candidates with serious name recognition.
4.
A USC law lecturer who previously held high-level roles at the Department of Homeland Security, which houses ICE, had a candid take on his former employer. DHS has become a “mechanism of authoritarian intimidation and incipient fascism,” said professor Seth Stodder. “It makes me think that maybe DHS was a bad idea.”
5.
A Chinese dude who does a killer Trump impression — aptly named “Chinese Trump” on TikTok, where he has a million followers — paid a visit to a USC classroom in a new video. “Let’s make China great again,” one student told him. “China is already great,” Chinese Trump responded.
