Boba chain opens in Viterbi cafe
Good morning. It’s Monday, and I’m reading about how Gen Z is still drinking. Onto the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
The boba chain Sharetea opened in Viterbi’s Tutor Hall Cafe. A standard milk tea will run you $7.29, which is more expensive than Yoboseyo Superette in the Village, but with the benefit of being able to pay with dining dollars if you’re on a meal plan.
2.
Police gave the all-clear after a bomb threat forced USC to evacuate Leavey and Doheny libraries yesterday. It’s unclear what the nature of the threat was. The incident came on the heels of a wave of mass shooter hoaxes that rattled colleges across the country last month.
3.
The LA Police Department stopped providing security for former Vice President Kamala Harris after receiving heavy criticism from its own officers. Mayor Karen Bass had ordered them to temporarily stand in after the White House pulled Harris’ Secret Service detail.
4.
Thieves in LA are sawing guardrails off of highways to steal their valuable aluminum base — a crime about as wacky as the copper wire theft that makes headlines every year. Caltrans said it has spent $62,000 repairing guardrails in LA and Ventura counties over the last two years.
5.
A state agency admonished an LA judge who has a history of making controversial remarks from the bench. The agency wrote that Judge Enrique Monguia once said “he would authorize his bailiff to use physical force, not for the bailiff to shoot counsel, but so Judge Monguia could shoot counsel himself.”
