Caruso eyes public office — again
Good morning. It’s Friday, and this Redditor is begging you to wear deodorant. I’m inclined to agree. Onto the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
Billionaire developer and USC trustee Rick Caruso said he’s “seriously looking at” running for California governor — or (again) for LA mayor. In 2022, he lost to Mayor Karen Bass after running the most expensive campaign in the city’s history. “I’ll make a decision soon on that,” he said.
2.
LA cops assigned to crime-fighting duties are instead guarding former Vice President Kamala Harris, after the White House pulled her Secret Service detail. The police union is not pleased. It’s “nuts” to assign cops to a “failed presidential candidate” who can “easily afford to pay for her own security,” the group wrote.
3.
Federal prosecutors sued Southern California Edison, alleging the utility failed to maintain its power lines which sparked the Eaton Fire. The Department of Justice is seeking $80 million in damages to cover the Forest Service’s costs for fighting the blaze.
4.
A ferry service linking Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, and Malibu could launch as soon as this year. A group of entrepreneurs say the so-called “Blue Highway” will shuttle passengers between Malibu and Santa Monica in 24 minutes.
5.
In case you’ve got a spare $3 million: A trove of Hollywood props is up for auction right now, including Darth Vader’s lightsaber ($3 million), Indiana Jones’s whip ($500,000), and the neuralyzer from Men in Black ($150,000).
