A newborn infant died at USC’s Cardinal Gardens Apartments Monday night, officials said.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the victim as a 19-hour-old infant, who Morning, Trojan is not naming because she was a minor. The cause of death was not immediately available.
The 911 call at the student housing complex came around 6:50 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The apartment complex is located across the street from USC’s campus and is operated by the school.
Citizen, an app that aggregates 911 calls and user-generated content about crime, reported a call for service related to a child left alone at Cardinal Gardens at 6:53 p.m. Monday.
About an hour earlier, at 5:56 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to the same apartment complex to transport a 20-year-old woman having difficulty breathing to the hospital. It’s unclear if the two incidents were related.
USC’s Department of Public Safety declined to comment, saying the LAPD is handling the investigation. On Monday night, the student social media platform SideChat was inundated with posts describing a large first responder presence at the apartments.
