ICE impersonator near campus
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.
1.
A man pretending to be an ICE agent harassed a woman and her Uber driver in a horrifying incident last week near the Village. A video caught the impersonator spitting at the two victims, who are both Hispanic, and a witness reported that he yelled “pull over you fucken wetback.”
2.
A former USC water polo coach convicted in the Varsity Blues scandal asked a judge for a new trial, arguing that prosecutors ignored evidence that USC higher-ups were aware of the admissions scheme. The school previously maintained that its dean of admissions was unaware of the illegal practices.
3.
FYI: USC’s Sustainability Hub offers free tuneups for bikes and skateboards every Tuesday. The repair station by the Student Union isn’t a full-service shop, but can help fix flat tires, wonky chains, and loose bearings.
4.
This year’s Conquest celebration, the annual event before the USC-UCLA football game, will break from tradition and won’t feature a concert. Instead, the campus celebration will have a “carnival theme” and the student government will direct more resources to the Springfest concert.
5.
Here’s a conversation starter: The Daily Trojan published a stinging indictment of the “evil men at USC.” The school’s dating pool, according to writer Luisa Luo, faces a “challenge of male emotional immaturity” and a “systemic shortage of empathetic, confident but not cocky, consistent” men.
