Dry January off to strong start

Good morning. It’s Friday, and these are the five USC, Los Angeles, and California stories you need to know for today.

1.

Rock and Reilly’s, one of USC’s few viable nightlife options, had to shut its doors early Wednesday after a mob of more than 300 bar-goers overwhelmed the pub. A public safety official described the crowd as “unruly” and said it “overwhelmed security and staff.”

2.

There aren’t enough bars near USC, god dammit! Don’t fear: We assembled the brain trust and, at the link below, used our brand-new ChatGPT EDU access to visualize the bars we’ve always yearned for, including a beer garden at Ministry of Coffee, a wine bar at Mudd Hall, and a double-decker Shryft party bus.

3.

Professors blasted USC’s decision to purchase ChatGPT EDU, the schoolwide enterprise license. Some seem displeased that AI exists to begin with. Others raised questions about the program’s cost and perceived lack of guardrails. “Are we bothering to train our students on when they should and shouldn’t use it?” asked writing professor Patti Taylor.

4.

A federal judge rejected the Trump administration’s demand that California share the personal information of its 23 million registered voters. The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking similar data from around two dozen states, most of them controlled by Democrats, ostensibly to combat voter fraud.

5.

Federal officers blinded a second protester with projectile launchers at a chaotic Santa Ana protest last week. A 31-year-old victim sustained eye injuries similar to those that a 21-year-old was previously reported to have suffered. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson falsely asserted that the protester sustained only a “cut.”

Have thoughts on ChatGPT EDU? Students, professors, staff: How are you using it? Professors: How pissed are you? Email [email protected] with the subject “Letter to the Editor.” Responses, including first name and last initial, will be published in a roundup next week and may be edited for length and clarity.
